Mixtape #07.

April, 2009: ...themeless (while I simply didn't like the current theme going on at that time lol).
The original theme for that month was based on a randomly generated image from Flickr. Instead of doing that, I went for a recommendational mix. Just as I did before in my spare time for cthulubelle, my monthly mixtape partner turned out to be vitreus, another member from the last.fm group whom I'm also a fan of.

Mixtape #08.

May, 2009: Bizarro Shopping.
So in May it actually turned out that the previously losing theme involving shopping lists made a victorious return. Even though I already made one as an extra mix, I decided to simply continue the theme. Groceries would be the positive, while Bizarro Shopping is the negative, where the order of artists is turned around, so welcome to the seveneleven FROM HELL.

May, 2009: extra mixtape.

R.E.M. 2 UNKLE.
It's the sequel to my March mix P.P. 2 R.E.M., and both me and my mixtape partner that month really got excited about the theme itself, we decided to create second volumes complementary to the previous ones. 1967-1987, and now: 1988-1998!

Duyster Mixtape III.

Sometime Later.
The third mix, and yet again based on an illustration. So far this is the last Duyster mixtape I've made in connection with their last.fm group, but the mixtrading over there has definitely been superb as well. :)

extra mixtapes!

In the first couple of months of 2009 I was also really starting to experiment more with mixing. Thus, this is a post involving other mixtapes I created at the same time. Most of the themes still involved the last.fm mixtape group, though.

Before February started off, I launched a thread for party mixes, and this is my first one.

In the meantime I quickly became a fan of other mixtapers in the monthly mixtape group, such as cthulubelle. Many of his previous mixtapes I checked out were just so wonderful, together with a style of artwork, which really defined him.
Through members like him I discovered quite a lot music. Especially weird noise and lo-fi tunes from the 90s and early 00s.

So I made a mixtape for him, themeless. :D

Next up ('cause it was February and all), indeed, a valentine mix. Baww. The funny thing is, though, that I compiled this mixtape together with Buckobucko, we've been dating for a very long time a couple of years ago, but at the time we created this, we were both getting into a new relationship. But since we're both extremely mellow about a lot of things in life, we just thought it was very comical to make something valentine-related together. Gotta love a background story like this lol.

Another idea for an extra mix from the last.fm group: to compile a 20-track mixtape where the last word of the first songtitle is the first word of the second songtitle, etcetera etcetera. I really wanted to try it out 'cause it sounded very hard to actually accomplish a whole mix like that. Indeed it was harsh, and I must admit I'm not a huge fan of this mix ultimately lol.
But I did it, and at that time involving experimenting, that's what kinda mattered.

Duyster Mixtape II.

Hiking For Health.
But in those mellow pretty cold months it was also yet again time for a Duyster mix. This time it was based on another illustration. Not quite steampunk like the previous one, but still rather cryptic in a way.

And finally, another extra mix: to put together a story with songtitles. Not as tough as the theme where the last word had to be the first word of the next track and so on and on, no. But it was very fun, nonetheless.

Mixtape #04.

January, 2009: Lightness. This was the first mix where I literally mixed the songs together, and a theme like this, darkness vs. light, it's a classic. There's no specific order in which I divided the dark or the light tracks, so it's a pure mixture.

Duyster Mixtape I.

Have A Merry 1889!
Duyster is pretty much the best Belgian radioshow there is, 'cause it contains a magnificent collection of harsh vs. mellow music: instrumental post-rock, shoegaze, indietronica, alt-folk, drone, alt-country, slowcore, ambient, lo-fi, etc. A wonderful gathering of neat genres, in other words.
And in their last.fm group ocasionally occurs a mixtape trading. The theme for it in January back then was based on this steampunk-like illustration.

So I also started creating compilations there (although this mixtape doesn't contain transitions like my other mixes that month).

Mixtape #05.

February, 2009: Testamental. An inheritance mix, or in other words: which songs and artists did you inherit from your parents and which songs would you pass on to your children? An incredibly fun theme, since my parents have always been into a music, especially my dad. All sorts of influences come from that side, but mainly stuff from the late 60's, early 70's (psychedelic, progressive, experimental folk, hard rock and all sorts of jazz). But also the typical classic 80's tracks are to be included (Tears For Fears and all that jazz).
But what I would like to pass on to my own kids? I still don't know. If I ever have children, I'll let them figure it out themselves for the most part, I guess. So I gathered a couple of contemporary fun tracks I particularly still listen to a lot.

Mixtape #06.

March, 2009: P.P. 2 R.E.M.
That months theme was all about years. So, taking on a period of time, I quickly decided and compiled tracks for each year (that period being 1967-1987). The first half of this mix is very similar to Testamental, due to most of the inherited tracks being from the forementioned late 60's and early 70's, although this theme wasn't quite the same... so at the moment it didn't bother me lol.

Mixtape #01.

October, 2008: Short Songs. Back then I didn't make transitions in between songs yet , but I did edit a couple of tracks by simply cutting them in half or so (like the Goose and Bit Shifter songs). All by all it's a pretty easy theme I guess, but I loved it for using it as an introduction (lots of aggro and weird stuff, hi my name is Karlien :D).

October, 2008: extra mixtape.

A losing theme that didn't win that month (and making an extra mix like this is what I pretty much always tend to do if there's another theme that's really really awesome to use): I Dare You To Listen To This! Mixtape #02.

November, 2008: Oh Shit. A compilation that would make you go "Oh shit!"... so after making I Dare You To Listen To This!, I considered this very similar, and loved gathering noisy stuff for it. It's actually pretty long for a single mixtape, but I guess I convinced myself that all the songs I ended up with became as good as essential, in a way.

November, 2008: extra mixtape.

Frankenstein Mix. This was organised by a side-group found by the admin of the last.fm mixtape forum, and there the official extra mix theme was this tracklisting:

- A favorite album opener
- A song from a movie
- A song that the Wu Tang Clan would make fun of
- A song used in a TV commercial
- A song where the title of the song is not in the lyrics of said song
- A song by a 'grunge' band
- A song by a two-hit wonder (or a one-hit, this one is hard...)
- A song that your parents would probably disapprove of
- A song that references the internet / computers.
- * Guilty pleasure wildcard *
- A short song
- A song for listening to while playing the original Zelda (or your own favorite computer game... i've never played Zelda)
- A theme song for your personal montage
- Teenage angst
- My, that's a funky-ass bassline you have there
- Fuck this, I'm leaving

Mixtape #03.

December, 2008: 0'eight. Of course December's always the time to sum up the best of the past year, but I usually have trouble coming up with lots and lots of names to gather for a typical best of compilation. Therefore it's really a mixture of the best of 2008 and (mostly) a lot of other discoveries made that year (but those discoveries themselves are older, yeah).
