extra mixtapes!

The Monthly Mixtape Mixtaper Mix... yeah, what's in a name eh. This is a conceptual mix I've mentioned before in a previous post where I've put up my first mixtaper mix: to create a tribute mix to plenty of fellow members of the last.fm group! First I started off with making a party mix involving that concept, but here's the actual mixtape that only includes a full selection of favorite songs all appearing in other people's compilations.

And at that time it was yet again the right moment for compiling my own second best of of past mixtapes I've created.
The first compilation like that consisted out of 8 tracks, and this one includes 7 songs from the following 7 monthly mixes. Why seven songs, well because it coincidentally then ended 'till my last mixtape of 2009, lol so that my next compilation like this would start off smoothly from the first month of 2010, which feels so exact that it's awesome yeah.

Mixtape #15.

December, 2009: So 00's.

The end of the crazy year was near and the winter was starting to get harsh, thus really wanting to create a warm and fuzzy mixtape to celebrate this end. The general theme for that month was all about, indeed: compiling a best of, wether it be a collection of songs from '09, from the entire past decade, or a neat combination of both!
And because of my love for all sorts of combinations (of pizza hut and taco bell) I came up with a definite order of tracks: 2009, 2000, 2009, 2001, 2009 and so on untill I end it 'till the 20th song for this mix. Looking at this mixtape afterwards, it's really quite long, but at the same time kind of appropriate because it's a best of a decade after all. Coherently filled with my absolute favorite artists, I'm glad it turned out the way it did and that it's not exactly the same as my december mix from back in 2008, where back then it was a different kind of combination of recent and old discoveries made in that year. :)

There's also a hidden track in the last song of this mixtape performed by two friends of mine, for secretly introducing them online or so lol.

Mixtape #16.

January, 2010.

With a weird yet groovy mood we start off this new year. But yet again, lots of things were going on and changing, both of the good, bad, and I suppose ugly kind too. Relationships were failing, yet careers were evolving. But only the dreamers dreaming win. But instead of getting too moody, here's my first mix of this year: Individu Animal.
Sure, a furry fuzzy mix, why not. It's really one of those themes with endless and even more endless options, but that's what really makes it incredibly fun to work with. And yes I simply felt like naming the mixtape after one of the tracks appearing on it! Because that is still an awesome thing to do.

Chain Mixtape I.

So at that time a lot of things were progressing and changing, just like the way things were going at the monthly mixtape forum by the way, what rulechanges such as no more mixpartners and all. Opinions were and still are divided I guess, but I go along with the flow in the end. At the same time I could look at things positively in a natural way, such as practicing with mixing in many ways. Such as this example: multiple chain mixing!

A couple of posts ago I made quite the elaborative message about it, but in conclusion it came down to this: I was inspired by the artist-linkeage theme itself, thus afterwards making a vaguely continueing chain mix every two months where the last bonus track on each mix shows what the first artist on the next chain mix will be!

extra mixtapes!!

In late 2009 there was still plenty of room for extra mixes to create, one of them is The Monthly Mixtape Party Mix Fest! A long title for a concrete conceptual mix, though.
This was based on a random mixtape I discovered in earlier threads in the monthly mixtape forum (since I mentioned before it's always healthy to look back, and to literally look back in older threads to discover themes and to see what it was like before I joined lol): the creator simply compiled a pretty big lists of tracks which were all the number one top tracks of all the member's charts!

And ever since I read that particular post, I somehow wanted to contribute something incredibly similar, to give credit so far to all fellow mixtapers in the last.fm forum. Because by that time, I tended to include more and more songs appearing in other people's compilations, thus easily wanting to creature some sort of tribute to them.
But this mixtape isn't that concept yet! I first started off with another party mix. 'Cause everyone loves a good party, and I especially loved it how I literally focused more on using tracks for this concept that have obviously appeared before in other mixes.
The difference between this party and a future "mixtaper" mix is that not all the songs come from other members' mixes. Time to dance.

In my previous Extra Mixtapes post here I included my own remixes of my second and third mix I made for the forum. And even later on I was sort of fascinated by the weird remixing thing. I continued it a little step further by making alternate versions of my first and second mix I made.
The difference between this and a remix is that the original tracks aren't present anymore, but there's often a link between tracks and/or artists, though. New and improved I'd say, !

Mixtape #12.

September, 2009: After Summer.

The end of the summer finally arrived, and it all came down to a collection of summer bummers: a pretty big anti-climax to a wonderful time. Almost sounds so typical yet I pretty much never experienced that much misery in one pile. BUT, instead of dwelling deeper into that misery, I simply had to express myself into a mixtape! By chance the theme that month was about summertime, so I was bound to be one of the few with a fitting melancholic mix, and I'm very glad how the creating of it turned out (especially how it somehow worked therapeutic lol).

Two extra things to mention: I've also put this mix into a King Crimson frame, since my mixtape partner that month had a Crimson avatar, so I adapted parts of the Moonchild song in the beginning and end of the compilation.
The artwork's yet again done by one of my best friends, since he's pretty much my household illustrator for the majority of all my mixtapes, and he experienced a similar summer bummer at pretty much the same period in time, thus we were supporting eachother that month as much as we could.
Yes, I did find it necessary to type out a story/summary for this mix 'cause it's rather essential lol.

October, 2009: Dive For Cover.

After recovering from the heavy summer time it was time for a cover mix. At first I wasn't very keen of that theme, I always thought it would almost be a drag to listen throughout a whole compilation of covers. Yet slowly but surely I convinced myself that it's not so bad at all lol.

October 2009: extra mixtape.

At that time one losing theme was a huge favorite as well: a halloween mix! Now, where I come from a festivity such as Halloween still isn't that big over here as it logically is in all of the US. I am, however, a huge horror fan, thus making this theme a big favorite one too!
And on top of having made this extra mix at the time, the last track from my cover mix makes it coincidentally rather fluent, since it's both a cover and a horror(s) track, so three cheers for linkeage lol.

Mixtape #14.

November, 2009: Once Twice Thrice.

And that month a theme ocurred that was yet again quite simple yet very very awesome: one to ten. Yes, it means that the first track's one minute long, the second two minutes, and so on 'till the tenth song which should be ten minutes. The really hidden challenge within this is of course selecting tracks that are the exact length of the supposed amount of minutes, but: I reached 54.9 minutes in total for this compilation, not 55. Which confused me way too much afterwards, but in a fun and good way.

extra mixtapes!

In the midst of the summer of 2009 I could still easily manage to somehow maintain my activities within mixtaping outside of a monthly theme, a good example of a sort of exercise in a mixing process was this: looking back at old themes that were used right before I joined the monthly mix group. One peculiar theme from back in 2008 caught my eye, which was a chain mixtape.
It's a fun and often challenging exercise 'cause it's meant to find a link between 10 artists or bands. And indeed, more difficult at times than it sounds but a very good exercise for learning more about certain bands and so. One mix I noticed was even done so well that the tenth artist was again connected to the first track! I simply chose not to go that far 'cause I knew the effort putting into wasn't present, or something.

How I chose the first and last song for my chain mix: the starting track is the first song that appeared on a personal recommendational mixtape I received, the last track is actually the same ending song used in the forementioned mix where the chain is totally complete!
In this extra mix I also included a pretty big bonus track at the end. This was basically 'cause of lengthy songs such as that: I barely use them in any mix at all, therefore finally simply putting them there as a grand finale, although the music isn't related at all to the chain itself.
Quite a summary for an extra mix eh lol.

As I mentioned earlier in this blog, in early 2009 I started to get the hang of mixing in the form of creating transitions and similar things, thus easily making me to even make remixes of mixes. Sounds wacky enough to do it, so I did do it. My second and third mix in newer forms, that's what it's basically all about, a couple of original tracks didn't survive it, though (but then again, those two particular mixtapes were pretty long to begin with, so it all could make sense in a way).

Mixtape #09.

June, 2009: "DANCING NAKED!"

In that month we had a tie between that theme and "SONGS FOR WHEN YOU ORDER A HOT CHOCOLATE IN A CAFE AND THE GUY ASKS IF YOU WANT WHIPPED CREAM AND YOU SAY NO THANKS AND THE GUY LOOKS YOU UP AND DOWN AND NODS A LITTLE TO HIMSELF"...
Of course, knowing me and realising both themes are extremely wonderful, I simply combined the two into one. A big collection of songs to dance naked to or the other option lol.

July, 2009: The Interrogation Tape! Yes! A question & answer mix. Of course you could easily go diverse with a theme like this, but the most fun part of the whole thing was putting it all together in a somewhat obscure interview-form.

A losing theme I also simply had to use for an extra mix was The Jabberwocky. This came down to a compilation of tracks in any language other than English. It's a rather weird mix, but I did feel weird at the time, so it's kinda natural.

Mixtape #11.

August, 2009: Surfaces.

The end of the summer was almost nearing yet surprisingly I continued having enough time for making a monthly mix and even more every, you know, month. In August the official theme was a crash course, where my mixtape partner could choose any artist from my last.fm charts and request a compilation involving that single band or artist.
I, however (being stubborn enough I guess!), yet again went for one of the losing themes where my heart went to at the time being. More than a month later though I did make the crash course eventually.
But the theme I did use was a space mix. Not typically filled with overwhelming psychedelics, but a pretty good fusion eitherway.

August, 2009: extra mixtape.

Thus, here is the extra crash course I eventually did make for my partner that month: dEUS and The Demo Saou! Both bands from Antwerp, Belgium. The extra similarity between the groups besides being from the same city: the collective factor, which is even bigger with The Demo Saou: lots of artists coming and going and lots of side-projects and new bands originating from the, eh, original band.
So the first part's about dEUS and the second disc involving The Demo Saou and its many similar projects.

extra mixtapes!!

After I finished the Bizarro Shopping mix in May 2009 I made this small compilation which is supposed to be a sort of best of. In other words, it consists out of eight tracks, the first song originally appearing in my very first mixtape, the next song from my second mix and so on. It's to create a sort of overall view of all my monthly mixing so far. :)

Another extra mix was a recommendational mix I made in early March, 2009. This was compiled for OneForAll, to partially convince him to check out more Japanese music artists. I have no clue at all wether I actually convinced him or not lol.

I also created this together with my partner in crime Bucko, 'cause he had a good selection of remixed songs to use for this collaboration mix.
